About Chestnut

Chestnut are a family-run financial advice practice.

It comes down to our practical and experienced advice to people, families and businesses in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. We pride ourselves on our friendly and approachable nature, and on playing an integral part of the local community.

Scope of Advice

Our financial advice covers a wide range of services including mortgages, insurance, equity release, long term care planning, investments and retirement planning.

Our clients are at the heart of everything we do. We understand the individual needs of each of our clients and implement tailored financial advice to address those needs.

We pride ourselves on delivering a rewarding face-to-face service. Our first visit is always on us, getting to learn about you, what you would like to achieve, and how best we might be able to be of service.

You can rest assured that we have the depth of experience and knowledge to provide our services for the long term, whatever your needs.

The value of pensions and investments and the income they produce can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayment on your mortgage.

Equity Release will reduce the value of your estate and can affect your eligibility for means tested benefits.

About Ian

Ian is the owner and financial adviser of Chestnut, travelling each week to meet clients across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

He gives help to people, solving mortgage, insurance, equity release, long term care planning, investment and pension planning needs; and helps businesses with their commercial needs, such as auto-enrolment, insurances, and ownership protection.

You’ll find Ian has a relaxed approach to meetings, happy to chat so long as you feed him coffee. Be prepared to hear about Farley (pictured below), his five year-old labrador retriever, but he’ll talk about everyone's pets if you let him!

Ian is married with three sons, two grandsons, and enjoys his food, wine (red by preference but very adaptable!), rugby (Saracens, Tigers, Saints, Newark, and Coventry Welsh (100 yards from the Ricoh Arena, home to Wasps), golf (Lincoln Golf Club), and walking my Labrador Farley (Bassingham and surrounding area, and the Dales).

Background

Ian has had 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry, many as a director and consultant, spread across:

  • banking and insurance,
  • personal financial advice,
  • company protection advice, and
  • asset management companies.

He holds the Diploma in Financial Planning, regularly building on his expertise with the continuous professional development regime of the Personal Finance Society.

Already well qualified to help clients with their financial planning needs, Ian has subsequently obtained specialist mortgages, equity release, and long term care qualifications.

Ian has much wider experience than financial planning; he has also held senior positions in several claims management companies, helping clients gain considerable sums in compensation.

In 2007, whilst a Director of one of the UK's largest firms of financial advisers, Ian gained his degree in law through the Open University. He has also represented several companies in courts and tribunals using his extensive legal experience.

Professionalism

Ian is a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute’s Personal Finance Society.

The industry regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) requires that all retail investment advisers hold a Statement of Professional Standing (SPS).

An SPS can only be issued by an FCA appointed accredited body, such as the Chartered Insurance Institute, and confirms that an adviser:
- Has adhered to a code of ethical standards
- Holds the required qualifications for the activities they undertake
- Has completed appropriate Continuous Professional Development, and
- Follows FCA “Statements of Principle and Code of Practice for Approved Persons”
